Ikhtiyar Uddin Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji's conquest of Bengal in 1203 AD was the nucleus of the beginning of Muslims rule in Bengal followed by Bugra Khan son of Sultan Gyasuddin Balban of Delhi as governor of Bengal at lakhnauti. It took more than hundred year to bring the whole of Bengal under muslim control. In 1338 Bengal witnessed the beginning of an independent Sultanate under fakhruddin mubarak shah with capital at Sonargaon.
