At various periods in Jewish history, some of the human figures

who represented the actual leader were:

Abraham

Isaac

Jacob

Joseph

Moses

Joshua

Saul

David

Solomon

Early in Moses' leadership, one could no longer say that these were the leaders of

"this religion". Very shortly after the Exodus from Egypt, as soon as the Tabernacle

was built, the religious leadership passed to the family of priests, descended from

Moses' brother Aaron. From that point on, Moses, Joshua, the judges and the kings

were the political and often military leaders, but not the religious leaders.
