A problem seems to have occurred in the earliest accounts of the death of Goliath, 1 Samuel chapter 17 and 2 Samuel chapter 20. In the first account, David killed Goliath, but in the second, and possibly older account, Elhanan killed the same Goliath.

The later Jewish history, 1 Chronicles, sought to resolve this by not mentioning the killing Goliath by David, even though the Book of Kings presents this at the most important single feat leading to David being accepted as a potential king, and (20:5) that Lahmi (Elhanan) killed the brother of Goliath. First Chronicles does not give us a name for this 'brother' of Goliath.
The King James (KJV) translation altered 2 Samuel 21:19 (in line with 1 Chronicles), adding 'the brother of' [in italics to indicate that this was not an exact translation], but most other English translations of the Book of Samuel seem to have more faithfully followed the Hebrew Bible version.
