The three synoptic gospels are the gospels now known as the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Although they are attributed to the disciples whose names they now bear, they were actually written anonymously and only attributed to the apostles Matthew, Mark and Luke later in the second century. There is no good reason to believe that those attributions were correct, and we do not know who wrote the synoptic gospels.

We do know that the authors of Matthew and Lukerelied on Mark's gospel for everything they knew about the life and mission of Jesus. This demonstrates that they could not have been eyewitnesses to the mission of Jesus, nor that they were acquainted with any eyewitnesses to the mission of Jesus. All we know of the three evangelists is that they lived in the second half of the first century and wrote down what had come to them about Jesus, adding such embellishments as they felt necessary, just as any writer of the time would have done.

Which author did not write one of the three synoptic reports on the life of Jesus Christ?

A:All the New Testament gospels were originally anonymous, which means that in spite of the best efforts of the second-century Church Fathers we do not know who any of the authors really were. The synoptic gospels were attributed to Matthew, Mark and Luke. The fourth gospel was attributed to the disciple John, although modern Bible scholars say that none of the gospels could have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed. For convenience, scholars continue to use these names for the authors of the gospels, so John did not write a synoptic gospel.
