It was done in ancient times: only if the sinner was warned by witnesses before sinning, only if two witnesses saw the crime, only after they were cross-examined in detail and no contradiction whatsoever was found between them, and only after a court of twenty-three had made every effort to ascertain that there are no valid exonerating arguments.
