Deuteronomy is the collection of a number of speeches or directions which Moses gave to the Israelites prior to their entry into Canaan.

Despite the skeptical scholarship begun in the 19th century by Julius Wellhausen and others, the actual evidence points to a single author for the Pentateuch, most likely Moses. He certainly would have been in the best position to know what he said. Secondly, many of the details in Deuteronomy are nonsensical in a later setting.
