It's special for a lot of the same reasons that it is for Jews and perhaps a few more as well. David, Israel's second and greatest king captured it around 1000BC and the Jews held it till about 586BC when it was largely destroyed by the Babylonians.

Solomon, David's son and successor, built a temple for God there and God was said to dwell there. Jews everywhere would come to worship God there. This temple was destroyed by the Babylonians but was rebuilt by Herod the Great (although it had already been partially rebuilt a few centuries earlier) and was destroyed again by the Romans in 70AD.

For Christians, however, Jerusalem's significance is also found in the fact that Jesus was crucified and rose again there. Some Christians also believe, like some Jews, that the end of the world will focus on Jerusalem and that Jesus will return there. However, not all Christians agree with this and instead see the significance of Jerusalem as being purely historical.
