This question is a puzzler. But I look at it as in the listing of the twelve tribes of Israel. The Book of Revelation lists them differently than the First Testament.
Its seems that it is up to God to determine who gets what emphasis. And that's just it. The listings are not simply a specific formula for figuring how many people were necessarily in a family. The listing are at least in part, put there for a reckoning on who gets specific emphasis, as chosen by God.
The tribes are rearranged. Obviously, the behavior of a person or nation affects their position with God. (This does not mean that we can earn God's approval by our own merits.) (Only Jesus can make even our good behaviors acceptable to God.)
But what these lists tell me is that, despite all the importance put upon Israel in The Bible, even they must approach God on His terms. Also, anyone can make it into the genealogy of God's Family, not just the Jew. This is exciting!
Seek God through Jesus. There is a future emphasis placed upon you if you will. And once part of God's adopted family, you must cooperate with God while on this earth. Or else, will you be skipped over in the listing of The Lamb's Book Of Life?
Abel's offering was acceptable to God. Obviously when he was killed, he was sealed into God's family. But the playing out of the Spectacle through history continued through Cain, as it does through us.

Further to this, the Bible does not have a particular interest in calculating numbers of people on earth. It has interest in God's dealing with particular people at particular places and times. Since, even after the flood, there was ungodliness, the interest stayed on the one Godly line tracing through Noah to Abraham to David and eventually to Jesus Christ.
Also, I have not seen the particular information regarding exponential growth mentioned in the question, but, when population is calculated, as many factors as possible are considered. Those who have done so from a Biblical perspective give as much ground as possible to Biblioskeptics. Even so, a very small rate of growth is necessary to arrive at the population we have around today, from the 8 persons on the ark.
