Because there was only one Christian church (after Jesus died) - the church of Christ. All the early Christians were Jewish, then the church was opened to all . Later the church split due to divisions and arguments of authority and rules, and other Christian denominations were formed. Catholics are the only ones to claim origin from the apostles and the early church as others broke away to form new Christian churches.
