The gospels are the primary source regarding the existence of Jesus, because they are the only source. No contemporary Roman records ever mention him. Even Philo of Alexandria, who wrote about every other important Jewish movement of his time, never mentioned Jesus of Nazareth.

Paul's epistles could be considered evidence of the actual existence of Jesus, but it has been noted that Paul never wrote about Jesus the person, never seemed to understand that Jesus was a historical person who lived and died in the recent past, and appears never to have shown any interest in visiting any of the sites associated with Jesus.

His writings provide an important source of information about the life and teachings of Jesus.

Why was the first part of John's Gospel called the Book of Signs?

A:Early biblical scholars did not immediately recognise the dependency of John's Gospel on the synoptic gospels, but realised that there did seem to be a source document from which parts of John were derived. They called this hypothetical source document the Signs Gospel, because of the references in Johnto 'signs'. Scholars now recognise that John's Gospel was loosely based on Luke's Gospel, with some material taken direct from Mark's Gospel, and thus the notion of a Signs Gospel, used by the author of John as a source, is no longer widely supported.

Which of the four Gospels is thought to have been written first and provided source material for later Gospels?

A:Mark's Gospel was written first, approximately 70 CE, and was the major source used for the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. John's Gospel is, in turn, loosely based on Luke, but the author also had Mark's Gospel and took some material direct from Mark.
