From a Christian point of view: It was God's original purpose that the Earth would be perfect. It is not perfect because humans have rebelled against God. It started when Adam and Eve wanted to decide for themselves what was right and what was wrong and not listen to God. Some 7000 years later and the majority of humans still feel this way. Instead of crushing the rebellion right away, God has let it play out for a set period of time to prove his sovereignty. But God's purposes always come true as Isaiah 55:11 says. He has thus redeemed mankind by allowing his son, Jesus Christ, to prove a human can be faithful until death. Through Jesus, he has established a Kingdom that is prophesied to rule over the earth. (Daniel 2:44 and Matthew 6:10) At that point one would expect the Earth to be made perfect again.
