Why did Benedict decide to become pope?

Few popes wanted to be elected pope. It is a huge responsibility and frequently leads to poor health and an early grave. However, if elected by his fellow cardinals, most accept the responsibility as being the will of God.

In modern times, at least, cardinals usually do not seek to become the pope as it is not something they desire. A pope almost becomes a prisoner of the Vatican, has little privacy or personal life, and has to try to maintain the Church amidst many different factions who try to influence the policies and teachings of the Church. After being elected, Pope Paul VI stated:
"The position is unique. It brings great solitude. 'I was solitary before, but now my solitude becomes complete and awesome.'"

Since papal conclaves are very secret, we will never know the reasons that Joseph Ratzinger was chosen. There could have been any number of reasons:

1.) Pope John Paul II considered him his choice to succeed him. However, cardinals do not have to follow that as a mandate.
2.) Cardinal Ratzinger was the most experienced and knowledgeable cardinal at the time.
3.) Because of his already advanced age, his reign would not be a long one. He would be, basically, an interim pope. Perhaps during his shorter reign a suitable cardinal would emerge as a potential new pope.
4.) Because of Benedict's experience in the Curia he would be a valuable asset to clean up many of the problems and abuses that crept into the Vatican during previous pontificates.
5.) Perhaps some felt that it was time to slow down the progressives in the Church and return to some of our pre-Vatican II heritage.

Any, all or none of the above reasons could account for Benedict's election. We will probably never know.

Actually, Joseph Ratzinger did not want to be pope and in no way did he seek the position. At the time of the conclave that elected him to the papacy, he was preparing to retire from his duties with the Church and devote his remaining days to writing. However, when elected, he accepted the position of pope.
