Why did God create dinosaurs?

Any answer would be pure speculation. From a Biblical point of view, the seven creative days were most likely very long periods of time based on what we have learned from science. (There are many instances in The Bible that uses "day" for a lengthy period of time.) In between the time when God made animals that roamed the Earth (including dinosaurs), and the time that he made the first humans could have been millions of years. We simply do not know for sure.

A common theory is that since God's purpose for man was to "fill the Earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28), the creatures that played a large role in subduing the Earth before the creation of man were the dinosaurs, especially herbivores. They would have been instrumental in making sure the vegetation of the Earth would not become unbalanced and overgrown. The carnivores would have played a large role in clearing the corpses of herbivores that had died.

Many who believe in the Biblical record, think that God destroyed the dinosaurs in the flood and did not save them because they were no longer needed. (Carbon dating of fossils is not taken into account by Biblical scholars, because there would have been a significantly less amount of carbon 14 in the atmosphere before the flood.) All of this of course, is pure speculation with a logical view on what might have been the reason for there creation, and subsequent extinction.

God created the universe, including this world and all that is in it. Many species have since gone extinct, some in recent times. Dinosaurs (Genesis 1:21) died out according to God's purposes and "timetable" for the various species.
