By the time John was written, early in the second century, sacrifices had ceased long before and were no longer of interest, but the resurrection of Lazarus was a compelling story about the divinity of Jesus.

Jesus' death was a choice, he did not have to die.

He did it because he loves the world and everyone it it so much, and he wants to spend eternity with us in Heaven! Not in hell, but see, all the sins we commit are on our shoulders, but the only person that could take those sins away and make us clean was God's Perfect Son, Jesus.

So Jesus died on the cross and took away all our sins so that we could go to heaven with Him when we die, but we have to accept him and invite him into our hearts to get to heaven.

Jesus did die, but guess what? He didn't stay dead! 3 days after he was buried, he came back to life and lived on the earth for a short time longer.

This is by far the most logical theory, since reincarnation and the dead walking on earth again, are physically impossible.
