Why did Jesus appeal to the people?

There was nothing complicated about him. He spoke to the people in a manner that they could all understand. This is why he spoke in parables, they understood what he was reffering to, but it confounded the wise men. He always had a friendly smile and was always willing to heal their sick without reward. He was a man of the people and for the people.

This is hard to explain. Based on the multitudes who are reported to have flocked to see Jesus, and the further thousands whom Acts of the Apostles reports that Peter converted, one would expect that a large part of the population of Galilee and Jerusalem would have been Christians. Yet the Christians seem to have been an insignificant proportion of the population at the time of the Roman-Jewish War in 70 CE. People may have come out of curiousity, but it seems clear that very few were convinced.

Jesus' teachings appealed to the poor and enslaved as a message of hope that someday they would gain paradise and their earthly suffering would be over.

It must be noted that the "Poor" and "The enslaved" are the spirit within, and the oppression and suffering are caused by the evil forces.(Matthew5v3-). One other thing is that there are both divine and fleshly sufferings.As in the case of Jesus Christ.

Jesus captured attention because of how he taught and the miracles that he performed. Just like now someone who is doing something out of the ordinary will gain followers.

Jesus was different. He taught as someone who had authority and he criticized the rulers. Today people who take the time to read The Bible and see for themselves who Jesus was will find the same attraction. He was anti-establishment and for the establishment of a radical way of life. Jesus calls us to give up everything to follow him.

Jesus' message is appealing and encouraging. (Matthew 5:1-7:27) His words are winsome and delightful. (Luke 4:22) The crowds are "astounded at his way of teaching," for he speaks from the Scriptures with authority. (Matthew 7:28, 29; Luke 4:32)
