Why did Sikh gurus become soldiers?

When there was too much injustice in the world and Guru Hargobind Sahib couldn't bear it any longer that was when Sikh guru's defended their and other peoples religions in a war. But keep in mind the Sikh's NEVER attacked the enemy forces first if the enemy attacked the Sikh's first then the Sikhs would defend themselves
