Why did religion get so big in the 1950's?

It can be said that religion was part of the popular culture of the 1950s because a large percentage of the population were brought up to believe in God, go to church, and had values based on the teachings of The Bible in the United States.

partly as a result of anticommunist ideals. historically, oaths have been made on a bible, or at least involve claiming god's trust, and therefore the trust of your peers, and what better way to prove that oath is legit than by going to church? because of stigmas like, "all Jews are communists", "all communists are atheists", and "atheists don't care if they lie under oath", establishing yourself as a "good christian" helped. this, combined with a fear that the "godless" communist might nuke anytown, usa at the drop of a hat, sent people rushin' to ask god to stop the Russians. then, jack Kennedy ran for office, raising new religious questions. as a catholic, wouldn't he be at the beck and call of the pope? that was a pretty close election, and some say that if Kennedy hadn't been so much better looking than Nixon, he would have lost it because of the Catholicism issue. soon it became important not only to be the right religion, but religious on top of that-something our founding fathers largely weren't. also, the fifties saw new ideas and technologies come to light that tacitly questioned the word of god as described-or interpreted- from the judeo-christian bible; space travel, carbon dating, DNA, birth control. this sent god's so-called shepherds calling on there flocks to believe harder, no matter what they learned. on top of that, the Civil Rights Movement pushed many people into an us vs them mentality, with many leaders from both sides being men of the cloth, citing biblical reasoning for both sides that many could get behind.
