St. Gemma Galgani was canonized as a saint due to her deep faith, extraordinary piety, and commitment to the spiritual life. Known for her mystical experiences, including visions and stigmata, she dedicated her life to prayer and acts of charity, particularly for the sick and suffering. Her devotion and the impact of her life inspired many, leading to her canonization by Pope Pius XII in 1940. Her legacy continues to resonate, particularly among devotees who seek her intercession.

St. Gemma Galgani was an Italian mystic who lived a life of prayer and penance. She received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, and had a deep devotion to the Passion of Christ. She is considered a patron saint of students, pharmacists, and those suffering from back pain.

April 11th (since this is the day of her death and therefore the day that she took flight to heaven) however the Passionist Congregation celebrates her feast day on May 16 ---St Gemma is considered a lay Passionist-- See also the external link in the box below for more info.
St. Gemma Galgani had an invisible stigmata. St. Catherine of Siena when receiving the stigmata asked our Lord if it could not show. Her stigmata did not become visible until after her death.
I've studied and admired the life of St Gemma for many years. We can be certain that no, St Gemma never "gave up"; she loved and served God until the end of her life. In the holy death of St Gemma Galgani, we discover that towards the end of her life she longed to be with God in heaven, and at the same time she was completely resigned to doing God's will in whatever He desired. See related link below for more information on this subject.
There are numerous Catholic saints who were given extraordinary mystical graces, such as the stigmata and heavenly visions. But since you say "she" perhaps you are thinking of St Gemma Galgani who lived about 100 years ago in Italy. She was gifted with the grace of being able to see and converse with her guardian angel and also God gave her the stigmata and the crown of thorns.
Only a few saints have been blessed with the wounds of Christ - St. Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio, for example. In their cases the wounds were visible and painful. Some saints have had the invisible stigmata - the wounds are still painful but not visible - St. Gemma Galgani is an example.
I have placed a link below where you can read the biography of St. Dominic and learn why he deserved the title of saint.
