Unable to cope with having lost the American civil war the South reject anything they regard as Yankee behaviour. Examples include scientific advances, tolerance of other races, tolerance of other religions, perceived threats to lifestyle such as gun restrictions. Rather than face their failings they retreat into siege mentality. This statement is not true at all.
