Why did the people crucify Jesus?

The people who were getting crucified, were laid down upon a cross, and nailed to it.

Then they would raise the cross with the person on it, and stick the cross in the ground.

They would hang up there until they died.

This is a very disgusting way for someone to do.

It frightens me to even think about it.

Great question. The people crucified Jesus because they saw him as a blasphemer who deserved to die- someone who claims to be God. In John 8:58 Jesus says, "...before Abraham was born, I am!" Abraham had lived thousands of years before Jesus. I AM was a name God had used for himself in ancient times. Jesus was claiming divinity. This made the people very angry.

Ultimately, Jesus was crucified because God planned it. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is the only sacrifice sufficient to pay for the sin of all mankind. We rebel against God, ignore him and Mae ourselves the gods of our lives- taking God's place. We deserve to die. But Jesus loves us so much he took our place and died instead of us. Now anyone who puts their trust in him and makes him king of their lives- his rightful place- doesn't have to face eternal death in hell because Jesus took their place. And Jesus rose again, so he is alive forever!

So the crucifixion, as terrible as it was, was God's plan all along to save us from hell and bring us into relationship with him.

The criminal's hands and feet were tied or nailed to a wooden cross, which was then lifted up and inserted into a hole in the ground. It was a humiliating, painful way to die as a person could survive on the cross for several days before dying. The victim's legs were sometimes broken to keep them from lifting themselves up to breathe. This then led to suffocation.
