Basically because the Greek word used in The Bible (Hades) simply means grave. It is from Hades that the English word Hell comes from. So in the interpretation of the Bible, someone got it wrong and decided that when you die you go to hell. In the King James version however, it notes that Jesus was in Hades (grave) for three days before he was raised up. Would Jehovah send Jesus to an actual hell? And what kind of loving God would send anyone to an eternal torment? There is mention of a different kind of eternal destruction in Revelation...Gehenna. Which is the lake of fire that Satan will be hurled into. Gehenna was also a place located outside the city walls of Jerusalem that burnt rubbish, dead bodies, animal remains (etc) The fire burned day and night (hence eternal fire) Hope that helps
