Shaytan/shaitan is the same word as Satan, and means "adversary"; the Muslim devil is called Iblis, and is supposedly an evil djinn, or genie. However, there can also be lesser devils, called shaitans (also djinni), similar to what in the West would be called demons or imps. The name is also applied to people or institutions Muslims don't like; you've probably heard the United States called the Great Satan by some ayatollah or other.
