For someone who realises that God is not tied down to a physical location, going to a "holy place" holds no meaning for them.
However, a person who feels affected by the atmosphere in revered locations may benefit from the focus their mind gains through the act of pilgrimage.
It's all down to the individual.
AnswerOften these people are the same ones who would think nothing of spending a great deal of time and money going to see their favourite football team play at a national stadium, or go to see a Madonna concert 200 miles away, again at great financial cost. The fact is that whilst I am a great rubgy fan, I would never darken the door of a football stadium as I do not hold the game, nor its ethos, in high regard. Nor am I a fan of Madonna and even if she came to my local theatre and I had a free ticket, I doubt if I would go.
The fact is that people are different. Some, like me, cannot see the attraction of 22 grown men kicking a bag of air around and then kissing each other if someone hits in in a net. I cannot see the talent in an ageing 'singer' despite millions who think that she is the biggest star in the world.
In the same way, as a person who has made several pilgrimages in his life, (Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Lindisfarne, Glastonbury, Canterbury etc) I do so because the background of that pilgrimage, ie the love of God in Jesus Christ, is of utmost importance to me. Others may think them pointless, as I do football and Madonna, simply because unfortunately they do not hold ideals like God's love for us in high regard, or, if they areChristian, do not think that Christian pilgrimages are the best way they can express their own spirituality.
The life of the people on the pilgrimages can be defined as religious. People went on the pilgrimages in order to pray.
