In Nehemiah 7:5, we find that this leader "found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first..." This list is different than the count that Ezra had. As far as name differences, these were common, just as we have nicknames and preferred names, such as second names. Sometimes the spelling of those names varied, which is common throughout The Bible.
The common practice of not counting women probably does not account for the difference from the total of 42,360, because it seems that there were significant number of women present. However, the total probably included those who were male children who were not counted in the individual household, because they were not of age. In cases of some, as stated in Nehemiah 7:64, they were not found in the recorded genealogical register, giving further cause for the two lists being different.
The totals of 42,360 are the accurate count of male Israelites returning from the Babylonian Captivity, which both Ezra, the Scribe, and Nehemiah, the Governor, reported.

Any set of four numbers that totals 20 has an average of 5.3, 4, 6, 7
A spreadsheet.
You add the numbers together and divide by the number of numbers. So, 2+4+6+8 totals 20. Divided by four gives you five.

These numbers are important because they verify that the information in that journal column has been posted to the corresponding ledger account.

Oh yeah.
The Median is the 'middle value' in your list or series of numbers. When the totals of the list are odd, the median is the middle entry in the list after sorting the list into increasing order. When the totals of the list are even, the median is equal to the sum of the two middle (after sorting the list into increasing order) numbers divided by two.

the plural of total is totals. As in "we will work out the totals soon".
The term "consecutive" only makes sense for integers; you can't solve this with integers.
