Because they don't know any better and don't want to know; it is a fundamental aspect of religion that adherents do not question what the leaders tell them, and take it on faith. Another factor is that it has been that way for over 1 and a haf millenia - it would take somewhat of a major change to alter anything that long-held.

AnswerSince it has been in place for so long and especially since the exact date is not known it is still appropriate to celebrate Christ's birth and what it represents when most other people also do. Most realize it is not the exact date, and even those Christians who do not celebrate Christmas sometimes take the opportunity to participate in family reunions at the time.
