Your question can't be completely answered. To a Sectarian Christian, a Muslim sins because he's not a Christian. To Muslims, someone who never prays is a sinner . To a Feminist, you are sinning if you don't recognize women or are a man. You have to define your viewpoint before you ask why people do what they do- to an Atheist, you cannot sin. But the Old English word's definition is "To break the law". So, to make intolerant Atheists happy, you must say, "Why do people Break the Law?"

So basically, the reason people do this is debated. Atheists cannot completely answer this question. Christians, Muslims, and Jews say Man disobeyed God and thus we are inherently "Sinful", Which is actually nicer to say than "Criminals", although that would also fit. I don't know what else to tell you.
Sin is not just something that we do but that what we do is also a symptom of a deeper problem. This it calls the power of sin which is ultimately out of our control to fix. This is very offensive to many but that's the way it is. Only fairy stories have faultless heroes .

In the universal language of mind, a sin is a mistake where no learning has occurred and therefore it will be repeated. Mistakes are a part of learning.
The problem is the fact that once we "sin," or make a mistake, we do not tend to learn from it. Often many people commit the same acts again and again. If you lie once, there is a probable chance that you will lie again. We sin because we are human beings. No human being is perfect. If you are perfect, then you have never sinned. There is not one person on this earth who has never made a mistake in their life.

For an atheist, there is no sin in having a Christian friend. Nor should it ever be regarded as a sin for a Christian to have an atheist friend, a Muslim friend or, for example, a Buddhist friend. Surely the greater sin is for anyone to imagine that it is a sin to have friends who do not happen to share the same beliefs.
