Why does the Church celebrate Mary the Mother of God?

Pope Paul IV officially declared Mary to be the Mother of the Church for several reasons. People believe her to not only be the mother of Jesus, but also of the faithful. Before she was named Mother of the Church, many called her the Mother of God.
