3. The 40 day fast of Lent is said to commemorate Jesus' 40 day fast. However, Jesus' fast took place after his baptism (in the autumn), not before his death (in the spring). On the other hand, a 40 day fast in the spring was common among the ancient pagan Egyptians, Greeks and Babylonians. The "Christian" custom was apparently borrowed from them.
