Why don't muslims like dogs?

Muslims don't hate dogs. They use them for security and hunting purposes and for tracing crime evidences. It is mentioned by prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that a prostitute was forgiven and entered the Paradise because she offered water to a dog that was thirsty and on verge to die. However, they avoid dogs in areas of praying and/or to be touched before praying because dogs are considered unclean (najis) and when dogs are in the home the angels don't enter the home.

Dogs can be kept only in certain circumstances. Angels will not enter a house in which a dog is kept.

It was said by the Prophet (pbuh), "Whoever keeps a dog, a portion of his good deeds will be deducted every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock"

Muslims do not dislike dogs, but they are generally regarded as impure and cannot be kept in the house, where prayers are also done.

It is not with the dogs but all animals generally. It is not allowed to offer prayer if the saliva of an animal has touched your clothes of any part of your body. If somehow the saliva of any animal has some in contact with your body then that part has to be washed same is with the clothes. People who pray regularly avoid dogs because they want to keep themselves and their clothes pure.

It is also said that keeping a dog just as a pet is not likeable.

However keeping it for safety of for example farm animals or your property is allowed and not seen as unlikeable.

I know many Muslims that have dogs and one reason some are afraid is based on where they live. In some countries there are many dogs running around wild and children are of course taught to stay away from them because wild dogs can bite you and spread diseases.

It is not true. Muslims like animals and they are commanded by God and prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to treat them kindly and feed them. They are also commanded to kill animals; that are allowed to eat their meat; gently and with mercy. It is narrated that prophet Muhammad said that a woman was punished by being pushed in Hell Fire for imprisoning a cat at home without feeding her and on the other hand didn't free her to search for her food outside. It is narrated also that a bad repudiated woman was rewarded by the Paradise for allowing water to a dog who was thirsty to death.

On the contrary, the Qur'an strongly enjoins Muslims to treat animals with care and compassion and never to abuse them. Animals, together with all creatures, are believed to praise God, even if this praise is not expressed in human language.

The Qur'an applies the word "Muslim" not only to humans but also to animals and the inanimate world. "The divine will manifests itself in the form of laws both in human society and in the world of nature." In Islamic terminology, for example, a bee is a Muslim precisely because it lives and dies obeying the sharia that God has prescribed for the community of bees, just as a person is a Muslim by virtue of the fact that he or she submits to the revealed sharia ordained for humans in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

While agreeing entirely with Answer 1, I wanted to note two particular traditions among Muslims and Arabs (the two groups are not the same but the tradition is common in both groups) that lead many non-Muslims to think that Muslims do not like animals.

Firstly, there is a strong dislike of pigs among Muslims since the pig represents impurity in Islam. Muslims try to avoid contact with and interaction with pigs to prevent this issue. This does not mean that Muslims wish for all pigs to die or be tortured but merely that they would prefer not to be in the same room with one. (This is very similar to arachnophobia in Western Society.)

Secondly, Arab and Muslim treatment of dogs is distinct from Western treatment of dogs. While Arabs and Muslims love their dogs, they do not allow them to come into their houses. A dog stays outside. There is still love, affection, long walks, petting, etc. between an Arab/Muslim and his dog, but the dog is just not allowed in the house.

Muslims do not like dogs because their leader, Muhammad, was attacked by a wild dog as a child. Since then Muslims have considered dogs to be evil, some even believe they are possessed by demons. None of these ideas can actually be proved, but there have been other times in history in which dogs attacked important Muslim leaders. Because it only seems that dogs don't like Muslims, some people have theorized that the dogs are not demons but rather that every pope is required to raise dogs and one day unleash them in an assassination attempt. Only one thing is clear. Dogs don't like Muslims. And Muslims, in return, don't like dogs.

Prophet Muhammad said that a prostitute found a hungry dog, she put off her shoes and filled it with water from a water well and allowed the dog to drink from it. For this good deed, Allah forgave her and promised her to be of the Paradise residents. Accordingly, Muslims don't hate dogs. However, they are commanded not to keep them in their houses because they are considered impure and that places or locations touched by them will be licitly not allowed and not suitable for praying (Salah). Dogs are allowed for use outdoors for home guarding purposes.
