Jews don't use cotton buds...? That's a new one on me - I certainly do, and so do a lot of other Jews I know. In fact, I'm fairly certain I recall seeing some next to the sink in a rabbi's bathroom, and he was most definitely a religious Jew; and the Totally Jewish website recommends using them for perfect nail varnish in their wedding guidelines at www.totallyjewish.com/simcha/?content_id=774.

Many Jews wear ties, too - www.absoluteties.com/nahane.html has a special Hanukkah one. I suspect you've seen Hasidic or Haredi Jews, however - as Orthodox Jews, they tend to dress in a very traditional manner with the black hats and coats, usually worn over a white shirt without a tie. In their case, there is no reason other than tradition, but many other Jews do wear them.
