1. Because an image is not a god. 2. Because the Buddha is not a god, but a teacher.
Buddharupa (one single word) is a Pali term referring to the statues of the Buddha.
He was a very important god after he was dead.
The belief of Buddha is there no "almighty god". There should not be a God that decides things. Buddha is omniscient but not omnipotent.
That Buddha was a god
Buddha is the god of Buddhism.
Hotei/laughing Buddha. He was not a god he was a guru, who is said to be the return of the Buddha!
Buddha never bothered about God. In fact Buddhism is an atheistic religion like Jainism. Later the followers of Buddha made him a God. Only after Mahayana Buddhism came he was made God. In Hinayana Buddhism Buddha was not a God. There is reference, though, in Buddhist text, to the "First Cause." Since God is the Creator of the universe and all that is therein, then God is the First Cause.
