Luke's Gospel says that one of the thieves mocked Jesus, but the other thief rebuked him and repented for his sins, creating the occasion for Jesus to talk about seeing him in paradise (Luke 23:40-43): "But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

By comparison, Matthew's Gospel makes it clear that neither thief repented, so there was no occasion for Jesus to talk about seeing him in paradise (Matthew 27:44):"The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth." Of course both authors had a copy of Mark's Gospel, but neither knew about the work of the other, and they were therefore unable to collaborate on this.

The earliest gospel, now known as Mark's Gospel, mentions the two thieves crucified with Jesus but does not say that either of them repented. We can read into this account of the crucifixion harmony with either Matthew's or Luke's account.

John's Gospel changes the original story about the crowd and the priests mocking Jesus, to have the priests argue with Pontius Pilate about the wording of the board above Jesus' head, leaving no room in the narrative for the thief to repent or otherwise.

What is meant by the salvation of all people in Lukes Gospel?

Salvation mainly means being saved from ones sins. Luke teaches that Jesus offers salvation to all people regardless of whether they are rich or poor, sick or well, male or female. It is offered to them, but not automatically bestowed on them. Repentance and belief still need to happen.

Where was lukes gospel written?

Luke's Gospel was likely written in Greece, specifically in the city of Antioch or possibly in another major city like Ephesus. Both cities were centers of early Christian activity and had significant populations of Greek-speaking individuals, making them ideal locations for the composition of Luke's Gospel, which was written in Greek.

What was lukes purpose in writing the gospel?

Let us look at what Luke told us of his purpose. "Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eye witnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us. It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first to write you an orderly account........ Luke wanted to write down the story of Jesus and he did that in this Gospel account. The Gospel is the Good news of Jesus Christ and Luke wanted his good friend, Theophilus, and everyone else to read about Jesus. If a person has good news they want everyone to know about it. Jesus came to earth to die for our sin. If we accept in our hearts that Jesus died for our sin and was resurrected the third day, the bible says we will inherit eternal life. (Romans 10:9-10, "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead you will be saved for with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

What does St. Lukes symbol mean?

From St. Luke's Catholic Church website: The symbol for St. Luke is the ox (or bull). This may account for his also being patron of butchers. In art, Luke is represented by a winged ox because he begins his gospel with an account of the priest, Zachary, (Zechariah), sacrificing in the temple. The ox represents Christ's sacrifice.

What are Lukes reasons for writing a third gospel?

According to the preface, Luke writes his Gospel so that Theophilius (who may have been a Roman official who became a Christian) will know the full truth of the things which he (Theophilius) has been taught. Luke says that he is qualified for this because he has listened to the eyewitnesses and investigated the stories from the beginning, and he says that his account will be an "orderly account". (Scholars have debated exactly what that means for a long time). In addition to this, Luke also wrote a second account - from the end of Jesus' ministry, through to the coming of the Holy Spirit and the history of the early Church. This account, also commissioned by Theophilus, was known as 'the Acts of the Apostles' and comes in The Bible after the Gospel of John. However, it also should be noted that Luke's gospel, though the third in the Bible, is not necessarily the third to be written. Scholars believe that mark's gospel was first to be written, and John's the last. However, it is uncertain which, between Matthew and Luke, was the second or third to be written.
