The term "Pentecostal" refers to a system of beliefs and experiences based from Acts chapter 2 of The Bible. Acts 2 records the events of the early Christians which happened on the Jewish feast of Pentecost (Acts 2:1).

Pentecostals look - and expect - to experience the same encounter with the Holy Spirit that is recorded in Acts 2:4: that when they receive the in-filling of the Holy Spirit, they speak in other languages, unknown to the speaker.

Why was the movement called Pentecostal?

The movement is called Pentecostal because it is rooted in the events of Pentecost, as described in the New Testament book of Acts, where the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, empowering them to speak in tongues and spread the gospel. This experience of spiritual empowerment and the belief in the ongoing presence and work of the Holy Spirit are central to Pentecostal theology and practice. The term reflects the emphasis on personal experience of God, particularly through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which is a hallmark of Pentecostal worship and belief.
