I don't know about other religions, but in Christianity intercession is necessary because Adam and Eve lost our oneness with God the father when they sinned. Now The Bible tells us we have to believe in the son to get to the father. That's why we pray in Jesus' name. Because he is our savior and our way to heaven, we go through him.
If you are asking about other religions, then I don't know.
Answer:
Intercession is the special permission granted by Allah to His selected people (to intercede) for the people He (Allah) will choose. It will be a great respect and honor for those who will intercede and it will be a help and blessing by Allah for those who will be forgiven as a result. Just like grace marks in an exam to push and pass some students who are closer to passing marks but need some help.
Here are the rules of intercession according to Quran
Intercession on that Day according to Quran
1: The Day of Judgment is a Day when no one will have the power to do anything for another. Judgment on that Day will wholly rest with Allah.
2: Intercession on that Day is wholly in the power of Allah.
3: That is a Day when none will speak except the one whom the Merciful may permit, and who speaks what is right.
4: On that Day no intercession will avail except the one for whom the most Merciful has given permission (to intercede) and be pleased to give him a hearing. (Because) He is fully aware of all that is before the people and of all that is behind them but others do not have full knowledge of it.
Here is a very nice collection of almost all the verses of Quran on this topic.
