Why is it important that Christians go to church?

The word translated from the Greek as "church" is ecclesia, a called out gathering. Throughout the New Testament, it is shown that common men who were in these assemblies were given extrodinary gifts by God. See the Acts. Jesus gave the code of conduct of churches in Matthew 18. Therefore if you are a believer, it is important to join yourself to an assembly to place yourself under authority as discussed by Paul in Ephesians 5.

Christians follow Jesus Christ who taught that He is present "when two or more gather together" and that the most important commandment is to love God and love each other. It is rather difficult to love people without getting to know each other; in fact, since the beginning of Christianity, Christians have lived together in close communities. In our contemporary society, we attend church as one way to gather together to experience the presence of God among us, as well as to share life and love with one another.

The word "church" is not referring to a building that people go to to worship and learn about God. Mathew 18:20 says "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." The Lord puts an emphasis on meeting with other who follow him so we can worship his name. Today, church has become a place where people are split up into age groups, sit down in a room, play worship music, and hear a well trained person dive into God's word. It is very important to listen to someone who was trained in this area give a well prepared lesson on what they think the Lord meant from their logical deductions. However, we must also remember that church is a place to have fellowship with other Christians, not just for fun but to honor God's name.

Church is important because its like sinners anonymous. Just like alcoholics got to meetings to learn to quit drinking, Christians go to church to learn to quit sinning. We learn what God's plan for us is and to take comfort in the fact that we are not alone in trying to better ourselves spiritually.
