Why is it inportent to know that Jesus did not stay dead?

"If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

"More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead. But He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.

"For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been risen either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

"Then those also who have fallen asleep [died] in Christ are lost.

"If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men." (I Cor.15:14-19 NIV)

Death had no power over Him and so, although He had surrendered His life 'as a ranson for many' and 'that He might taste death for every man'. Thus, although He was in the grave for a time God raised Him on the third day. Death is ultimately a consequence of sin - Jesus had to die since He was bearing sin in our place, but, that done, He did not need to stay dead - in fact He needed to rise to demonstrate finally who He really was and to be the 'first among many brethren' who also will rise.

If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then believers will also not rise from the dead. In that way, faith in Jesus would be useless. If a believer dies and stays dead, and an unbeliever dies and stays dead, what use is believing then?
