Why is the church called apostolic?

The Old Apostolic Faith is the only faith that leads to soul salvation I see the Old Apostolic Church as 'a way of life'. Although it is a Spiritual church, it proves to come in very handy when I apply my Spiritual thoughts to my natural life. We don't see The Bible as 'natural' but see it in a Spiritual way which, personally, makes alot more sense than what is plainly written in black and white. You could almost say we pay attention to the story behind the story... I am what we call a 'born-Apostolic' (Born in - and brought up in this church) and wouldn't exchange my faith in this Church for anything in the world!

An Apostolic church is people who are apostolic. Being an Apostolic is just a definition of what the "members" of the church are called because they believe as the Apostles in the bible.

Apostolics believe:

• The Bible is the inspired and infallible (unaltered) Word of God, written by holy men of old, as they were moved on by the Holy Ghost.
• In the one God who is infinite in power, Holy in nature, attributes and purposes, as well as omniscient and omnipresent.
• He was revealed to us as Father in creation, as Son in redemption and as Holy Spirit in His comforting grace that never leaves those who trust in Him.
• That in Jesus, dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. For it pleases the Father that in Him should all the fullness dwell.
• In the virgin birth. Jesus was both human and divine. He was God manifested in the flesh.
• In the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. We believe He ascended on high and has sent His Spirit (Holy Spirit) which was poured out at Jerusalem over 1900 years ago; and it is the same Spirit that is filling the hearts of those who diligently seek Him today.
• Believe in the baptism in water by immersion in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and the baptism of the Holy Ghost, speaking in other tongues as the Spirit give utterance. This constitutes the new birth.
• In a holy and sanctified life. We believe in the divine healing, and communion. In the glorious catching away of the saints when Jesus returns in the cloud in glory to take His people to heaven with Him (The Rapture).

In CatholicismThe answers above define the Apostolic Church, but not an apostolic church. Many Christian denominations today accept the Nicene Creed, declaring the church to be one holy catholic apostolic church. (Apostolic meaning tracing its teachings, beliefs, and linage of leaders or elders back to the apostles, but not necessarily all the fundamental elements of the Apostolic Church).

In the catholic churches (Roman Catholic, Anglican, and orthodox) Apostolic means that all the priests have been ordained by a series of priests going back to the Apostles. The Apostles ordained priests, who ordained other priests. This succession continues to the present day. Every priest has been ordained by a priest who was ordained by a succession of priests who were ordained by one of Christ's Apostles.

The New Apostolic Church is a cult which proclaims themselves to be the only "Way" to heaven. Only they have "living apostles", and this results in further claims of forgiveness of sins, Holy Spirit "sealing", and salvation only to be found in this so-called "church". Furthermore they celebrate services for dead people, whom they believe have another chance of salvation, irrespective of how they lived. The dead are "invited" to attend the services, where proxies (usually apostles) receive sacraments on behalf of the dead who accepted the invitation. These souls are now "saved". They proclaim you to be "lost" when you leave the church, which is the only unpardonable sin to them.

The New Apostolic Church does not maintain that it is the only way to Heaven. They do have living Apostles as was Christ's wish when he established this ministry. Please read Ephesians 4:11-12. This ministry is to be active until the saints are perfected and we all come to the unity of the faith. Christ Himself decended into the realms of the departed to serve the souls there. as outlined in scipture. Anyone who leaves this church is always welcome to come back and is not alienated in anyway but instead is prayed for, loved and missed. Christ died for our our sins. Therefore to say that leaving the church is an unpardonable sin is grieviously mistaken.

To say that the Church is apostolic is to say that the Church can exhibit, as an historical fact, that she possesses lawful and uninterrupted succession of her Bishops from the Apostles. Her faith, worship, and discipline remaining ever the same in all essential things. The only church, amongst the myriad of churches in existence today, that can do this is the Catholic Church.

Apostolic Church is a Pentecostal Christian denomination which can trace its origins back to around 1904 during the "Welsh Revival." Although the it's a relatively new denomination, the church seeks to stand for first-century Christianity in it's faith, practices, and government.

The purpose of the denomination was summed up by one prominent Apostolic write as:

"to make know world-wide the forgiveness of sins through the atoning death of Christ; the baptism in water by immersion; the baptism of the Holy Ghost; the five gifts of our Ascended Lord; and the vision referred to in the New Testament as 'the Church which is his Body."

Jesus Christ commanded the apostles, in an order called the Great Commission, to go forth to all the nations of the world and teach them about God, and love, and goodness and compassion. He added that those who believed would have everlasting life and those who did not would be damned. The same orders apply to churches now, is why they are still called apostolic.

The apostles ordained others as priests. Those priests, in turn, ordained other priests. This is the apostolic progression that defines an apostolic church. The priests today have been ordained by priests that go in a direct line back to Christ's Apostles.
