Some Christians believe that the human body is "a temple" and believes this temple is the home to Jesus Christ. With that belief is the strong desire to keep the body "clean" from any bad habits such as smoking, drinking, over-eating, etc. Therefore, they would also value the study of preventative health and cures for illness since all persons do encounter common viruses and bacteria.

The roots of believing the body is a "temple has its roots in centuries' old beliefs.

However, other Christians do not have as strong an interest in health. People in this group may not do anything special to prevent illness, and may participate in negative health habits.

Changes have occurred in religious thinking about health (such as: that illness results from sin) have changed to a more scientific view about health and a spiritual view about Christianity. These changes were boosted by scientific discoveries through the 1900s to 2000. For example, insanity is no longer viewed as a person being "evil"; further, insanity due to untreated syphilis is now known to be caused by untreated syphilis, not from possession. Epilepsy is now understood as a brain disorder, rather than a demonic possession. The examples are endless.
