Because if there was no suffering there would be no compassion.

According to Biology death exists because if we all lived forever we would eventually deplete every possible resource and go extinct, thus natural selection would never create an organism that would live indefinitely, as well as entropy, the frailty of the human body etc.

The more important question is why is there suffering.

The existence of a god which is both omnipotent and benevolent is impossible, as one philosopher put it:

"The gods can either take away evil from the world and will not, or, being willing to do so, cannot; or they neither can nor will, or lastly, they are both able and willing. If they have the will to remove evil and cannot, then they are not omnipotent. If they can, but will not, than they are not benevolent. If they are neither able nor willing, then they are neither omnipotent nor benevolent. Lastly, if they are both able and willing to annihilate evil, how does it exist?"

- Epicures, 300 B.C.

Apologists of the various theistic religions try to rationalize this by saying free will is necessary and all evil stems from this - but diseases, natural disasters, poisonous insects and reptiles etc (causes of much suffering) are not a result of human will.

In spite of the opinions listed above, The Bible says that death entered into the world because of Adam. The entire world - not just intentional evil, but everything, including natural disasters, disease, and the like - is cursed due to man's fall.

How can this be good?

Ignoring the possibility that we may have a skewed view of "good," death means that we aren't stuck in an evil, cursed world forever.

For one thing, God isn't a being he is a spirit. Secondly, He isn't the one causing the deaths of these many people. It is either Wars, murders, accidental killings, disease, natural causes, self-inflected or many many other things. These people die not because God killed them, but because it was their time to go. No one is going to live forever. We'll all die eventually. It may not be today or next year but it will happen.
