Catholics are raised and nurtured in their faith by their parents, family members, teachers, parishioners, etc. It is the responsibility of the parents to raise their children in the Catholic faith until they reach the age of reason and can decide for themselves if they want to continue to live as Catholics or not. Confirmation is the sacrament in which the person confirms their decision to follow God through the teachings of the Catholic Church, and in doing so becomes recognized as a full member of the Catholic Church in his or her own right (not by the right of their parents). A confirmed member is now seen as an adult in the eyes of the Church. As a confirmed Catholic, this sacrament was crucial for me because I established myself as a follower of God and a believer in the teachings of the Catholic Church. I decided for myself. It made my faith wholly mine. My parents nurtured it while I was a child, and as an adult, I chose to continue my life as a Catholic.
