Jeremiah was a mix of two things people have a tough time putting up with: a Doomsday Predictor and an Advocate for Harsh Changes.

Doomsday Predictor: Jeremiah went on and on about how Jerusalem would fall and a day of reckoning would be upon the people. Nobody wants to listen to somebody forecasting problems or difficulties, because that means that people should expend resources without a "clear" threat.

Advocate for Harsh Changes: He constantly admonished the Judeans for their practice of idol worship, which would have gotten their ire because they were quite happy to disobey God's religion and invoke the local gods. It's similar to how people today get angry when told to eat differently than they currently do. It doesn't win friends.
