Francis of Assisi did go through a canonization process as the process was instituted in the 11th and 12th century. He was canonized on July 16, 1228, by Pope Gregory IX. Whether miracles were required for canonization at the time is unclear. However, his canonization would have been based on his life of heroic virtue as witnessed by the people who knew him. His was one of the fastest canonization processes to have been carried out, having been elevated to the altars barely two years after his death.
