I have a soft spot for impetuous Peter. Throughout the Gospels and the Book of Acts Peter shows his character well. Peter was always the first to blurt out something before thinking - he was always the one who took the 'bull by the horns' when things went wrong. He was always impetuous, quick-witted, and the one who often opened his mouth before engaging his brain. He also had huge weaknesses - he denied Jesus three times at the time when Jesus needed him most. In short, Peter was just a normal sort of guy. However, the qualities he had, the impetuosity and quickness, and the immense loyalty that he had for Jesus - especially after Jesus forgave Peter for denying him when they talked after the resurrection - and coupled with the inner strength of the Holy Spirit received by Peter at Pentecost, meant that Peter had immense qualities of leadership of the other disciples. It wasn't an empty do-as-I-say leadership either. Peter was imprisoned several times for his beliefs, he helped spread the message, along with Paul, Barnabas, Silas and others, right across the Empire, and was loyal right to his own death - by crucifixion upside down - for his beliefs.
