The 'book' of Philemon was actually a letter written by Paul to his friend and fellow Christian, Philemon, asking him to forgive Onesimus, Philemon's once rebellious, escaped slave. If we read the letter (verses 1-25), we can see that, apparently, Onesimus had run away from Philemon's employ, and found himself in Rome where he met the Apostle Paul (who was in prison for preaching). Paul taught him about Jesus, and Onesimus listened, learned and became a Christian 'brother'. Now, with his new life-style and attitude, he was no longer 'useless', but had earned Paul's love and trust as a 'fellow worker' . Though Philemon could have punished Onesimus for leaving, Paul asked him to accept him back as a fellow Christian and forgive him. He sent the letter to the Colossians with Onesimus and Tychicus (Colossians 4:7-9) and in it discussed the relationship between a slave and his master (Colossians 3:22-4:1).
