Why was it necessary for Jesus to die?

Mankind sinned against God by choosing to disobey His commands (which He gave in order to keep us from harming ourselves and others). The Bible declares the the wages (the payment due) for sin is death. Originally God accepted animal sacrifice as the blood payment, but this was just a shadow of the Sacrifice to come because the blood of animals could never truly cleanse mankind from sin. God in His foreknowledge, knowing that mankind would sin and knowing that because He is Just He would have to punish sin (just like a human judge punishes lawbreakers), had a plan to offer His mercy and grace and forgivess justly by having Someone pay the punishment we deserve. Of course, this Person had to be sinless or else it would have no effect. So God allowed His one and only begotten Son to come into the world, be born of a virgin (God in nature is perfect and He cannot be born of human nature which is passed along human lines, ie sexual reproduction). He lived a sinless life and was sacrificed (killed willingly by the Romans and the Jews at the time). But He not only died for us, but rose from the dead by the power of God the Father, thereby defeating sin, death and the devil. By believing in Him, His shed Blood (death) and resurrection, we can receive the forgiveness of God and Eternal Life!

God created the world perfect without suffering or despair. Humankind sinned against God so suffering entered the world. This is called the fall. The punishment for sin is death. Everyone is a sinner so we all deserve to die. God loves us so he sent Jesus, who was perfect and sinless, to die instead of us so that we may spend eternity with him. Because we are all by nature sinners. The scriptures tell us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and there is none righteous (Romans 3:10). Therefore those who try to obtain eternal life by their own efforts are doomed from the start for no one is good enough. Jesus had to die because God's justice demanded a "perfect" sacrifice for sin. Scripture tells us that God is perfect and infinite in holiness. It also says that God exists in "inapproachable light," which is both real and symbolic of His holiness. Nothing impure or unholy can survive the presence of God. Yet, God is also perfect and infinite in love. And He loves man without abandon. You can see that in many Old Testament Psalms about His love. Of course, we also see in John 3:16 that "God so loved the world..." Sin is at its core, an offense against God. He is creator and He is Lord, and anything that is done that does not meet His standard is inconsistent with His holiness. In God's economy (justice), sin cannot remain, nor can it be put under the rug. Just because He loves us doesn't mean He can demonstrate that love until sin has been dealt with. God's justice demands death of the sinner. This clearly presents a problem. God created man to love and share with him, forever. Death was not a feature of God's creation "until" sin entered in. When sin came the sinners (Adam & Eve) became instantly aware of their nakedness. This is both literal and figurative, in that they instantly felt uncomfortable in front of God and hid. Sin separates us from God. God's immediate solution was to take the life of an animal and create a covering for their nakedness. God demanded a solution for their sin "if" they were to remain alive. Because sin is inconsistent with every attribute of God, if sinful man is to survive God has to do something. Because of the reprehensible nature of sin, in God's eyes, the solution required the death of another, a substitute. So God took the life of an animal to cover Adam & Eve's sin and nakedness. As time passed and God made a covenant with the Jews, He also made a provision for their sin. Again it required the death of a substitute, in this case an innocent, spotless lamb, with blemish. Innocent in the sense that it had committed no offense itself, otherwise it could not be suitable as a substitute because it would have been required to die for its own offenses. God commanded the Jews to take the blood of the sacrificed lamb and sprinkle it on the Ark of the Covenant. In this way the blood of the acceptable substitute covered the Jews sin and God saw the blood instead of their sin. As remarkable a system as it was, the death of a lamb could not put away the sin of all mankind forever. God's justice would prevent Him from being able to show His love to man for eternity. A better substitute for sin had to be found. No man could serve as an acceptable substitute because we are all sinful. None of us has measured up to God's standards. Because death is demanded of us all, none of us could then serve as an eternal substitute. So God decided that only He could serve as an acceptable substitute, without spot or blemish, innocent. In the form of a man Jesus came to earth to die. To die and serve as the substitute for everyone that will ever live. Such a monumental pile of sin required a more monumental substitute. Jesus allowed Himself to be beaten, tortured, and nailed to a wooden cross. If that weren't enough, He was punished spiritually by His own Father on that cross for every one of us. God had to see Jesus as He would see sin, and destroy it forever. This is what killed Christ. But death could not contain the eternal Son, and He rose again and put His blood on the heavenly Ark as a once and for all time substitute to cover and put away man's sin. Now God was free to show His love to man forever. How does a man take advantage of this substitute? By faith. By trusting in Jesus as the God-man who took away his sin by His blood, forever. This is why Jesus had to die. Please understand, God does not take pleasure in death and blood. But a perfect God, perfect in purity and holiness and justice cannot tolerate sin in His presence. If His love for man was to achieve His ultimate goal of spending eternity with man, then the terrible penalty had to be paid to satisfy God's justice. God found nothing suitable except for His own death on a cross. If He was to love man forever in His presence then only He could pay such a price. And He did. God is fully satisfied with this sacrifice and it now becomes the grounds on which a Holy God can accept sinful man. Now God waits for each man to recognize his own sinful condition and trust in the sacrifice of His Son to pay the penalty for his own sin. This is very, very difficult to grasp. The issues of sin, death, blood and forgiveness are all difficult concepts. The important thing to take away from this is to understand that God is holy and pure, and man is not. God's love is infinite, and He designed the means by which He could solve the offense of man's sin so He could spend eternity with man. The means by which man can take advantage of God's solution is faith. Faith that trusts God's solution for sin and faith in the one who made all this possible, Jesus Christ. Jesus said "no man can come to the Father except through Me." By this He means coming to Him in faith that His blood has satisfied God's justice. Such faith doesn't simply trust in facts alone, but also in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus was God's perfect sacrifice, and since only God is perfect, the man who comes to Jesus also recognizes that this Jesus is fully God. In this way Jesus serves as both Savior and Lord (God).

Jesus had to die so that we could enter God's kingdom. If He did not die, then no one was there to save our sins and we would be sinful, and therefore, we could not enter the kingdom of heaven, but we would enter satans kingdom, which is death-neverending pain.
