1000AD exists within the 350 or so years of "The Dark Ages."

Called so because the light of religious truth was held back from men (many claim by the Catholic Church).

As such, religion wasn't considered important at this time because people simply didn't KNOW what it was they were supposed to be believing.

Even religious devotees had limitations placed on them about what they could study, based on superstition and the whims of the Catholic Church at that time.

Many books (and services) were translated into Latin which was beyond the reach to understand (even verbally) of the common man in the street.

Of course; this had financial benefits too, what we call nowadays, a monopoly on spiritual assets...
