Most people don't take God's Commandments seriously [which is how "sin" came about - I John 3:4]. The carnal human mind has its own way of reasoning around God's laws, not giving them any thought at all... or any deep thought or consideration... which is a foolish way of thinking [even if unconsciously]: "Oh, I'll worship God in my own way... He'll understand."
Aaron sons were guilty of this foolish nature of man. They were the first of the Lord's priesthood among the Israelites, recently liberated from generations [400-plus years] of Egyptian slavery. God chose Aaron and his sons to administer His statutes, laws and judgments before the people. They were supposed to exemplify God's authority and Godly conduct.
They foolishly assumed that "God would understand" when they [as the NIV Bible puts it]: "...OFFERED UNAUTHORIZED FIRE BEFORE THE LORD, CONTRARY TO HIS COMMAND." (Lev.10:1)
"So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Moses then said to Aaron, 'This is what the LORD spoke of when He said: ''AMONG THOSE WHO APPROACH ME I will show Myself Holy; IN THE SIGHT OF THE PEOPLE I WILL BE HONORED.'' ' Aaron remained silent." (verses 2-3)
The conduct and duties of the priesthood is laid out in great detail in God's Word, and they were required to "obey it to the letter." Aaron's sons "approached the Lord disrespectfully"... and paid the price, immediately, for their "sin."
They thought God would understand... but it was Aaron, the sons he had left and the Israelites who got a lesson in understanding.
God gives us His laws for our "good"... not as a burden, as man in his carnal mind reasons. Their intent is to be "a lamp unto our feet"... to illuminate our path and guide us through life. They are laws of OUTWARD "respect and love," first for our Creator... and secondly, for and toward one another.
Aaron's sons didn't respect their office and place in life before the God by whom they were employed.
God's blessings were lost on many of His chosen people in times past... and is manifesting itself again within America, the [at one time] most blessed nation on the face of the earth.
And the experience of Aaron's sons and other such lessons witness to us throughout The Bible, testify to us, and warn us to respect and honor the One who made us.
"For the LORD's portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance. In a desert land He found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded and cared for him; He guarded him as the apple of His eye...
"The LORD alone led him; NO FOREIGN GOD WAS WITH HIM.
"[then follows a description of the blessings America has enjoyed... complete with a modern description of the American people]... he became heavy and sleek [FAT]. He abandoned the God who made him and rejected the Rock his Savior.
"They made Him jealous with their foreign gods and angered Him with their detestable idols. They sacrificed to demons, which are not God -- gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear.
"You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth..." (Deut.32:9-18 NIV).
Aaron's sons "forgot." They failed to remember the "jealousy" of the exacting God they served, even though it was written into His law, which they knew:
"...for I the Lord thy God am a JEALOUS God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; and shewing mercy upon them that love Me and keep My Commandments." (Ex.20:5-6)
Aaron's sons were priests, called of God to serve Him and should have known better the nature of the God they served. We know Him today as Jesus Christ [John 1:3 & 10].
"...I will come near to you to Judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his sight, and fear Me not, saith the Lord of Hosts. For I am the Lord [Jesus Christ is His name]. I CHANGE NOT; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." (Malachi 3:5-6)
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." (Heb.13:8)
Aaron's sons, the appointed as servants of God, were killed because they provoked Him to jealousy by perverting His commands... and thought God would understand.
