You don't give a century or a country, but just ask a very general question, but I shall hazard a guess. Protestants who do not understand the Most Holy Eucharist, seem to think that Catholics are murdering Christ all over again at every holy Mass. They don't seem to understand that Christ's death on the cross was a one time only event, but that since Christ is also God, everything He did (and does) is eternal, like Him. The Eucharist or Holy Mass is the touch point at which people who were born two thousand years later are able to be present when Christ sacrificed Himself on the Cross on Calvary and witness that once and only event.
