I can speak other languages, even if not very well. I can prove this ability, because people can understand me and can respond appropriately. If I merely babbled and called it "speaking in tongues", no one would really understand me or, if I do it well enough, be able to prove if I am merely faking it. All I could achieve is to impress the impressionable.

To the same extent, everyone else can already "speak in tongues", regardless of religion or background. This "ability" proves nothing, brings no one closer to God and is just a way for the pious to impress each other. At least no harm is done.

Another contributor explains that when this happens in their church there is usually an "interpreter" present to translate. This suggests immediately a double-act for unless the language is genuine and the interpreter fluent, no-one can translate it. More likely the "interpreter" is the actual preacher at the time with the other babbling a few words in advanced to re-inforce the illusion to the gullible.
