Synonyms of wholeheartedly would include unreservedly, unrestrainedly, enthusiastically.... ...and sincerely.
Some of them were not yet willing to admit that Jesus is Messiah and savior. It was also prophesied that some of them would reject the Messiah.

If a person was a "good Jew" he/she would be trying to follow the Law of Moses. Jesus explained a better way of doing this. If a person didn't care about the Law of Moses for what ever reason, after listening to Jesus they would either follow Jesus or forget about Him and continue on the way they were going. Jesus' message had a very strong pull and influence upon people. They either believed Him or they didn't. These people are no different from people today.

If someone decided to follow Jesus, they could get more information on the internet and at any church which they choose to go to. They can also talk to any religious leader who would be open to accepting a new member.
Jesus knew that because people hated Him and His teachings, persecution and and other forms of hatred would always be directed towards those who follow Him.
